The impact of conflict on Nigeria organizations has come under focus in recent
times. The teaching hospitals are most exception within the last few years, the
predominance of conflict in different forms, arbitration panels, industrial
actions and associated management problems.
The aim of this study is to investigate the causes, effects and remedies of
organizational conflicts in Nigeria teaching hospital (UNTH) Enugu. Both
primary and secondary data were used in the study. Primary data were collected
through questionnaires and interview on a number of issues such as the causes,
types and effects of conflicts. Chi-square is the quantitative technique
Used for the data analysis,
which was needed to test the formulated hypothesis, consequently the following
findings were made from the research.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The role of efficient
management in human health and development cannot be over emphasized. Number
R.E (1982) has stressed the need to evolve good management practices in health
care delivery in Nigeria. The federal, state and local governments are all
committed at least in principles to the goal foe achieving good health for all
citizens by the year 2006.
In Nigeria health sector, different categories of hospitals, the general
hospital, the federal medical centers, special hospitals, teaching hospitals
and other medical institutions like the non-governmental or private hospitals.
Currently there are teaching hospitals in almost every state of the federation.
The activities of these teaching hospitals can broadly be classified into
three: training, services and research. In order to carry out these three
activities teaching hospital work in collaboration with the federal ministry,
the hospital board and the teaching hospital, four main categories of staff are
usually available and these are medical staff or doctors, the Para-medical
staff, the scientists and the support staff, that is those who are concerned
with providing basic facilities such as space administrative support,
engineering, and maintenance workers ensure continuous and effective delivery
of hospital services.
In spite of the above framework, poor management has been identified as one of
the problems militating against efficient health services in Nigeria (Abuja
Health Summit, 1995). This is also the case in other countries are usually
faced with management problems (Stoner and worked 1986) because of the conflict
management is an important aspect of health policy management in Nigeria (UNTH
annual bulletin, 1997)
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
One of the basic management
problems in hospitals has been external or land internal conflict. Thus, the
enduring challenge for hospital management is how to carry out effective
administration in this special environment so as to maximize efficiency and
minimize waste. The incidence of conflict in hospitals necessitate a proper
investigation into the organizational framework and functions of the Nigerian
hospitals are points of focus.
The pertinent questions are:
Which are the common causes of conflict in UNTH?
What type of conflict is experienced in UNTH?
Which type of conflict gives the highest functional or dysfunctional result?
is the impact of conflict on the efficiency of UNTH?
What appropriate methods or means can be used to manage conflict in UNTH?
1.3 PROBLEM THAT THE STUDY WILL BE CONCENTRATED WITH OR
The research formulated the
following null hypothesis:
1. The incidence of conflict in
UNTH is a function of any of these factors.
Clash between individual’s goals and organizational goals.
Limited amount or scarcity of resources
Interdependence of works activities
Differences in individual values and perceptions
Individual life style
2. Negative effect of conflict
resolution method applied in UNTH exceeds its positive effects on the

1.5 DEFINITION OF IMPORTANT TERMS
Some important terms which are
used in the cause of this work includes; Background, Statement, Hypothesis and
This means the circumstances,
facts or events that influence, cause or explain something. In this case, the
background of the study includes all relevant circumstances that affects the
cause of study, i.e. the background information of the study.
According to the dictionary, a statement means something that is stated
e.g. the chairman is expected to make a public statement about the
company’s plans. In this study, we can understand that statement is a formal
account of facts, views, problems, e.t.c.; a report on an issue. For
instance, the problem of the study is stated above.
This is an idea or a suggestion that is based on known facts and is used as a
basis for reasoning or further investigation. It equally means the problem that
the study will be concentrated with.
As the word indicates, means importance or relevance of something. So as being
used in this work, it implies the importance of studying the subject area.
