ABSTRACT
This project has attempted to discourage the
brazen impact of the classroom on the learning of the child, the researcher
tried to obtain from the students, the classroom. The abstract within the
classroom which hindered or aided teaching and learning process, the instrument
used for collection of information were from five schools, the analysis of data
was done on percentage calculations the result of the study shows that: the
classroom available does not commensurate with increasing population of the
students in school, teaching aids are not provided for schools. In light of
these findings, the researcher made the following recommendations based on the
analysis of the data that; the government should build more blocks of classroom
to meet with the need of ever increasing population of the learners. The
teachers should make adequate use of teaching and learning aids and finally,
the government should provide teaching aids and resources for teachers so that
effective teaching and learning can take place in the classroom.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
This study on the impact of the classroom on the academic performance of
students in schools was carried out in Uselu Secondary School, Uselu Quarters
of Egor Local Government Local Government Area of Edo State. The teachers and
students there, the subject used. Uselu Secondary School is one and single
school, it has never been splinted into two schools, but it remains as one of
the single school by the Egor Local Government via the state secondary school
board for Benin City. The one and single is in time opf composition of teachers
and students admitted in other words, the school structure and infrastructure
remains the same. Uselu secondary school has thirteen classrooms but it used to
house class from the above it is clear that t he school was not splinted
because there is no enough classroom accommodation in the school. historically,
Uselu secondary school was founded and opened October, 1980. The available
classrooms then were ten only, this school project was executed by the civilian
administration of the late Prof. F. Alli, then governor of t he defunct Bendel
State he hatched and executed this school project. This was based on the free
education policy of the party (NPN) it is the importance of education that made
that government to establish so many schools at that time to ease the problem
of distance in school, to lessen the financial bondage on parents and to
further eradicate illiteracy from the society.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The magnitude of classroom problems on teaching and learning is very difficult
to determine because so many extraneous variables impinge on the teaching
skills and learning capabilities of teachers and students in the classroom at
different times. The time between classroom hours and home hours is hard to
define and varies from individual to individual. This study takes a critical
look at the impact of classroom at different times on the cling and learning of
teachers and students respectively in secondary schools in Benin the Edo State
capital.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study has been limited to five selected secondary schools out of the
entire ninety-six secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State
which are in secondary school, Adolor Secondary School, Benin Technical School,
Police Children Secondary School, and Uwelu Secondary School.
PURPOSE OF THE
STUDY
The major purpose of this study is to find out the effect of the classroom on
the academic performance of students in the selected schools. It is also
finding out how the teachers and students are coping with their classroom. To
find out if the teachers and students have alternative means of treating those
problems associated with the classroom.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE
STUDY
This study hopefully will be useful to teachers in Edo State in general and
Egor Local Government Area in particular. The result of these findings will
guide the classroom teachers on the methodology to follow when teaching as this
will help lessen the problems associated with the classroom. There will be
improvement in the students thinking ability and their creative skills.
Besides, it will serve as a literature for future research students and
researcher and also as a documentation of facts for historical purpose and
records.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The study is designed to provide answers to research questions from the data
collected through interviews and questionnaires;
1. Are
there enough seats for the students?
2. How
many students are there in a class?
3. Is
the classroom conducive for learning?
4. Do
students have enough classroom accommodation in their school?
5. Does
the weather either sunny or rainy affect teaching/learning processes in the
classroom?
6. Do
teacher teach better in the classroom when materials are available?
7. Do
the students learn better when teaching aids are used in the classroom during teaching?
8. Does
the method of teaching in the classroom affect the learning capability of the
students?
9. Does
the classroom affect teaching?
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Classroom: A room in which a class of students are
taught.
Learning: This is gaining knowledge by studying practice
or groups in a school compound.
Impinge: Have an effect or impact on something.
Extraneous: Unrelated or irrelevant to the subject
Academic: This has to d o with education or study
Student: A person studying at a university or College
Effect: A change produces by an action or other cause,
a result.
School: An educational institution
Performance: To carry into effect or complete an action.
Methodology: A system of methods used in a particular
field.
Affect: Make a difference to.
Teaching: To give instruction in any way to persons or
groups in a school compound.
Secondary: of education for children from the age of 11
to 16 or 18.
