INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The national policy on
education stresses among other things the importance of skill development in
the youth in preparation for a meaningful living in the society. Secretariat
courses are skill subjects that requires mastering the basic principles that
underline the writing of strokes and keyboards. The secretarial students must
have a good ear of decipher differences in words and linguistic information.
She/he must also have a good memory which serves as the data bank in the
transformation of sound into shorthand characters. Secretariat study requires
diligence and understanding in English words are important in secretariat
courses and transcription from recorded materials dictation.
The learner of secretariat must be taught by some one who knows
not only secretariat, but who can teach these subject, motivate the learner and
provide an appropriate environment for learning. Furthermore, this new system
of education knows a 6-3-3-4 is aimed at making students self reliant, but
unfortunately students perform poorly in these secretarial subjects. Some of
the possible causes of students poor performance in secretariat studies could
be as a result of the following poor attitude of students towards secretariat
studies lack of accessibility to classroom and equipment after lecture hours.
Inability to coordinate the head, heart and the hand, students poor background
in English language and poor method of teaching among other causes. Information
from some old students of this college suggests that one of the most alarming
problems before the college is that although there is in adequate supply of
teaching and learning facilities, the few ones available after lecture hours.
This problem is the motivating concern in this research.
The problem of this study is
that a lot of students still prefer other business courses to secretarial
studies, which is mainly shorthand and typewriting despite their importance in
our school curriculum and in the job market. It has also been observed that
students attitude towards secretariat studies is generally poor. It is
imperative and pertinent to have a look on some correlated question as regard
these problems.
This study is basically
designed to investigate the fathers responsible for students poor performance
in secretarial studies in the tertiary institution, identify the probable
difficulties and problems which confront students and hinder their progress in the
study of these subject.
The result of the study is
intended to be used to correct the errors that will be discovered. And it will
provide good reason of schools to improve in secretarial (shorthand and
typewriting) the need for industries to meet the scientific and technical
demands of the nature has been intensified, hence scientific, technical and
vocational programmes were offered at both secondary and tertiary level of
education. In this respect of the need to acquire technological expertise was
no longer focused on knowledge alone, but on skill too. In view of this is it
time to put an end to the high failure rate of secretarial (Shorthand and
typewriting) in higher institution of learning where the course are being offered.
This study is limited to
students of the tertiary institution.
In this study, it is assumed
that the attitude of lecture and students towards the subject (typewriting and
shorthand) influence the effectiveness of teaching and learning situation in
one tertiary institution.
For the purpose of this
research question are to be tested.
1. Does students inability to gain access to
classrooms and equipment after lecture hours affect their performance in
secretariat (typewriting and shorthand studies)
2. Students find it difficult to retain what they
have learnt because of the difficult nature of secretariat subject (shorthand
and typewriting)
3. Student’s lack of interest in secretarial
subject (shorthand and typewriting) is due to teaching methods.
4. Lack of textbook and teaching materials studies
(typewriting and shorthand) affect student’s performance.
According to oxford dictionary new edition defined secretarial as
the staff of secretarial of a large organization that get a position of a
secretary.
Attitude: This refer to the way or feeling, thinking or behaviour.
Students: A person under going a specific course in the college of
